“What a box of tricks! This full-throttle thriller, dark and driving, rivals Agatha Christie for sheer ingenuity and James Patterson for flat-out speed. Swift, sharp, and relentless.” (A. J. Finn, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Woman in the Window)“No Exit is everything I want in a thriller: ingeniously crafted, unapologetically relentless, and shamelessly suspenseful. A brilliant, edgy thriller about four strangers, a blizzard, a kidnapped child, and a determined young woman desperate to unmask and outwit a vicious psychopath.
A kidnapped little girl locked in a stranger’s van. No help for miles. What would you do?
On her way to Utah to see her dying mother, college student Darby Thorne gets caught in a fierce blizzard in the mountains of Colorado. With the roads impassable, she’s forced to wait out the storm at a remote highway rest stop. Inside are some vending machines, a coffee maker, and four complete strangers.
Desperate to find a signal to call home, Darby goes back out into the storm . . . and makes a horrifying discovery. In the back of the van parked next to her car, a little girl is locked in an animal crate.
Who is the child? Why has she been taken? And how can Darby save her?
There is no cell phone reception, no telephone, and no way out. One of her fellow travelers is a kidnapper. But which one?
Trapped in an increasingly dangerous situation, with a child’s life and her own on the line, Darby must find a way to break the girl out of the van and escape.
But who can she trust?
With exquisitely controlled pacing, Taylor Adams diabolically ratchets up the tension with every page. Full of terrifying twists and hairpin turns, No Exit will have you on the edge of your seat and leave you breathless.
It was like a horrible Scooby Doo episode.... This is one of the worst books I have read in a very long time. The writing was such that I was distracted by it to the point where I couldn’t enjoy the storyline. It was like a horrible Scooby Doo episode. No one talks like this. Especially cops. No cop says they’re going to go search for clues! No cop repeatedly calls a suspect a perp! OMG stop watching tv and talk to some real life cops! This was my first and last book by this author. I am baffled by the awesome reviews.A well-written thriller Our protagonist Darby is a college student who is racing home through Colorado to be with her dying mother. An unfortunate combination of blizzard conditions, a jackknifed semi, and zero cell phone reception soon leaves her trapped at a highway rest area with four strangers. They all play Go Fish for a while until the snow plow comes and they go on their way. Just kidding. Darby discovers a young girl duct taped in a van and all hell breaks loose and you can't breathe or sleep until you finish the darn book. And even then you'll probably think about it for a while longer.Darby is a resourceful heroine. At one point she jimmies a lock with a shoelace, crafts a makeshift weapon from a sock and a rock (helpfully called a "rock-in-a-sock"), and creates a time-delayed explosive device on the fly. Since when does CU Boulder have Sophomores with the skills of a Navy SEAL? At any rate, she's an even match for our villain, who I will not spoil here, and their tit-for-tat takes us through much of the action. The action does get pretty gruesome at times. One of our characters endures a terrible injury that is described in excruciating detail, so this book may not be for those with a weak stomach.Above all, this book is just plain well-written. The simple setting means that every object has importance. There is no wasted dialogue; everything the characters say has meaning which may be apparent immediately or later in the book. As a reader you will endure a lot, but the resolution will bring everything together.Taylor Adams takes few prisoners Agatha Christie could not have set it up better. Our heroine is a young college student returning to a home she swore was behind her. Her mother is headed into a life threatening surgery necessitating her eating her words. A high speed return over the Rocky Mountains slows to a crawl as a blizzard shuts down traffic and the road closes behind her just before she hits a major mountain pass. Cell coverage disappears, car problems worsen and deepening snow forces her to take refuge in a seemingly opportune rest stop. Three cars parked outside, four people inside, oh,and a little girl locked in a dog cage in the back of one of those vehicles. It was just chance that allowed her a glimpse of the tiny prisoner and chance seems to rule the night. Which one of the people inside is the monster behind the kidnaping and how to rescue that little girl? Among her smaller worries are things like surviving the night, getting ahold of her mother-you know, the usual. The plot contains little new for a seasoned mystery reader, but it is the execution that sets NO EXIT apart from the rest of the pack. A well sketched, sympathetic main protagonist and believable supporting characters drawn with depth make this an intriguing read. Add in a fast pace and a surprisingly rousing ending and you have escape entertainment done well.
